It was hard work but the food was delicious. And I made rent.

Around this time, my mom gave me a book called The Money Book for the Young, Fabulous & Broke by personal finance guru Suze Orman. I was definitely young, and close to broke, but I didn’t feel fabulous. Nonetheless, I read the book cover to cover. I promised myself I would follow its advice.

Several months later, I transitioned to a temp job in an office. The hours were better and I hoped it would provide a wider range of job opportunities down the line. But I was actually making less money than when I worked at the restaurant.

Over my first year in New York, I scraped by financially. But I managed to save about $100 a month, enough to cover the move-in fees on my new, cheaper apartment. Not only that, but my hope proved true: The first day in my new apartment was also the first day of my new salaried job (with benefits!) at $40k. On my own and for the first time, I had moved up a rung. It felt amazing.

I tracked my spending and earned at least a little more than I spent. But to secure my financial future I knew I needed to apply more lessons from Suze’s book. In my mid twenties, I focused on paying off student loans, retirement planning, and taking advantage of compounding interest.

Within a few months of getting a salaried job, I opened up a Roth IRA, set up automatic contributions, and invested in low-cost, broad market ETFs.

It wasn’t long before I got raises, changed jobs, and eventually started to earn more than the allowable income threshold for contributing to a Roth IRA. I felt fortunate, and yes, even a little “fabulous” by this point.

My Roth has continued growing on its own even though I haven’t contributed in many years. Today, my Roth IRA is a powerful testament to the power of compounding and early action.

Why do I share this now?

I’ve been thinking about the early days of my personal finance journey because MoneySwell recently brought on two social media interns from the University of Colorado Boulder: Lyndsey Shahani and Parker Brown. They will be working with us throughout the fall and I’m excited to have them on board!

As they use MoneySwell to manage their money and learn important financial lessons, I’m thrilled to see their first posts focusing on compounding interest, retirement planning, and budgeting.

Regular financial upkeep is about creating healthy financial routines.

Financial upkeep falls into four buckets:

Tracking Your Numbers: Know your liquid cash, current debt, short and long-term savings, and net worth. Know how much you’ve spent and saved, and get a rough idea of your projected expenses and savings opportunities.

Making Adjustments: By tracking your numbers you know where you stand and can make adjustments as necessary. For example, if you’ve spent more than you planned or made less than you expected, ask yourself what can you do in the coming days, weeks and months to make up for it.

Planning Goals: Set annual spending and saving goals. If applicable to your job or side hustle, set earnings goals too. Break those goals down into quarterly and monthly benchmarks and as part of your financial upkeep, see where you are. If there’s no chance of hitting your original goals, make adjustments.

Following Up & Taking Action: As your life changes and as you learn more about financial topics that apply to you, you need to take action. This might mean setting up a college savings fund for your child, adjusting your paycheck deductions after you get married or have a child or even just learning more about a newly applicable topic. Your financial upkeep means looking at “follow-up” items and taking action in a timely manner.

No single product, advisor or plan will work for everyone. But one remarkably consistent feature of those who have and maintain financial success, is that they have a healthy financial routine. “Every year I do ____, ____, and ____. Every month I do ____, ____, and ____.”

Why is having a financial routine so important? For the vast majority, financial success isn’t achieved overnight. Instead, achieving financial success is something that happens through a series of consistent and often small steps that move us in the right direction.

Unfortunately, the challenge for many is that these small steps, while important, are rarely urgent. With busy lives, it’s easy to push financial tasks to the backburner. Doing so for a day or a week may not have much of an impact. But delaying important financial tasks for months or years can have serious negative consequences. Regular financial upkeep with tasks that fall into each of the buckets listed above, ensures you can stay on track and achieve your financial goals.

How to Create a Financial Routine

Consider the financial upkeep routines listed below and apply what you feel is most relevant to your situation. Using your MoneySwell tools can help you develop healthy financial routines for many of the tasks detailed below.

Important Components of Strong Financial Routines

What

Description

Frequency

Review & Update Account Values

Check your values daily or weekly to understand where you are and spot check for unexpected withdrawals or deposits. In Assets & Liabilities, you can sync your linked accounts in one click. We recommend updating your manual accounts at least once a month to develop your personal historical record.

Daily/Weekly (check), Monthly (update)

Update Savings Numbers

If you have dedicated savings accounts, use Budget Planner to add your monthly savings contributions. If you use a tool to track your investment accounts, track your contributions first and foremost. While the overall account value may fluctuate with the value of your investments, in the long run, making regular contributions to a diversified portfolio is your best bet for achieving your goals.

Monthly

Update Liquid Cash Projections

Tracking how much liquid cash you’re likely to have allows you to confidently save, invest, and spend while knowing you’ll have enough in your accounts to cover it all. You can use a spreadsheet (or wait for this MoneySwell feature to come out!) to enter the dates and amounts for all regular deposits and withdrawals for the month. When possible, you’ll likely want to enter cumulative expenses (e.g. a credit card payment) rather than each individual expense to keep things manageable.

Monthly or Quarterly

Update Overall Spending

Use Budget Planner to track overall spending. For credit and debit cards, look at the “purchases” line on your monthly statement and if necessary, subtract any refunds. For checking accounts, add up all withdrawals for relevant transactions and subtract any reimbursements.

Monthly

Review Goals

Write down financial goals and take a few minutes every month to review these goals. Ask yourself if you’re on track or if your goals need to be adjusted. Be honest with yourself.

Monthly

Add One-off To Dos

Much of your financial life may be automated but there will always be more to learn and research and other tasks that come up. Add these notes to a place where you check off your financial tasks.

As Needed

Follow-up on One-off To Dos

Don’t put off taking action on your to-do list. In most cases, following up on one-off to does every other week is sufficient. But make sure you give yourself the time for these often mundane but important tasks. Your future self will thank you.

Bi-Weekly

Financial Check-in

If you have a partner, staying on the same financial page is one of the most important things you can do for your financial wellness. While one person may manage the more frequent financial upkeep, put some time on your calendars for a holistic review of where you are.

Monthly / Quarterly

Sync Retirement Accounts

When you sync your investment accounts, don’t worry about values going up or down (assuming you have a well diversified portfolio). But keep an eye on the numbers and use a retirement calculator to ensure you’re on track with your long-term goals. Remember, focus on your account contributions more than the precise account values at a given time.

Annually

Set SMART Goals

Setting goals annually is a good level-set for the year. Acknowledge your successes and challenges from the previous year, and build on those as you set your sites on the upcoming year.

Annually

Educate Yourself

Whether it’s content on MoneySwell.com or any other content on or offline, making personal finance education a regular part of your week will ensure you are informed and maximizing your chances for success. Add “personal finance” as a topic in your news feeds on your mobile devices, subscribe to a newsletter, blog magazine or podcast or read a book about personal finance.

Weekly

Pay Your Bills

If your bills aren’t paid automatically each month make sure you pay them. If they are paid automatically, do a quick double check to confirm everything went through as expected and for the right amount.

Monthly

While checking it weekly will help you to see what “normal” fluctuations in your score look like, once you have a feel for that, an occasional checkup is all that’s needed. Don’t forget, in most instances, unless you are about to apply for a loan or some other form of credit, your score doesn’t matter all that much.

The primary reasons to check it are A) to make sure there aren’t any obvious errors in your credit report and B) to make sure your score is generally heading in the right direction over time.

Because your score is a snapshot in time and a variety of factors can impact it in the short term, let’s take a brief look at the most common reason for a score fluctuation: your credit utilization percentage. This is the amount of credit you’re using over the total credit available to you. All things being equal, the lower your credit utilization, the better your credit score. So for example, a 5% credit utilization rate is better than a 25% utilization rate. (Typically, utilization rates for those with the best credit scores are less than 10% but shoot for whatever you can and see “Pro Tips” below.)

Example

Let’s walk through an example:

For simplicity, we’ll assume you have only one source of credit and it’s all on one credit card that has a total credit limit of $25,000.

You always pay the full amount on your card which is typically around $2,000 for an 8% credit utilization rate ($2,000/$25,000=8%).

But this month, at the time the credit reporting agency takes its “snapshot”, your balance on that card is $5,000.

This means your credit utilization is 20% ($5,000/$25,000 = 20% credit utilization).

So even though you plan to pay this off in full at the end of the month – which would effectively mean your “real” credit utilization is 0% – the credit reporting agency doesn’t know that at the time they take their snapshot. All they know is what they see.

An increase in your credit utilization from 8% to 20% would likely trigger a drop to your credit score even though nothing has really changed.

This is just one example of why we say to only check your score and report no more than once a month and in most cases, once every two or three is fine too.

Pro Tips

Two Ways to Lower Your Credit Utilization and Improve Your Credit Score

Call your credit card company and ask them to raise your credit limit. While this might trigger a hard inquiry, that is only temporary and has a lower impact on your score than your credit utilization rate. And a higher credit limit combined with the same spending will lower your utilization which will improve your score. Typically, for a customer with a good history of responsibly using their credit card, a card company will happy to raise your limit. (But don’t use this as an excuse to charge more!)

Pay off your credit card balance twice a month. By paying your credit card balance off twice a month, you are effectively lowering the maximum amount of credit used at that particular moment in time. So if you typically charge $4,000 a month but pay it off in two payments of $2,000 instead of the whole $4,000 all at the end, the maximum amount of credit being used at any given moment would be around $2,000 (assuming equally spaced spending) which would effectively lower your utilization by half.

And don’t forget, you can always lower your utilization by simply charging less on your credit cards.

Minor fluctuations are totally normal. But if you see a big shift, check your credit REPORT to find out what changed.

You can find your credit score by going directly to one of the three major credit reporting agencies (Equifax, Experian, TransUnion) or using a third party site (e.g. Credit.com, Credit Karma, Credit Sesame etc.). These options will all allow you to get your score for free even though some may offer extra services for a fee.

Remember: Your credit score is just a snapshot in time. It will fluctuate week to week and month to month. But document it here to have a ballpark figure and to take notice if you see major unexpected changes.

Additionally, checking your own credit score will not hurt your score. When you check your own score, this is known as a “soft inquiry.” Soft inquiries have no impact on your score. “Hard inquiries” on the other hand can negatively impact your score but it has only a low and temporary impact. A hard inquiry is usually performed by a potential creditor who is considering lending you money, e.g. for a car loan, a credit card etc.

Since you can get a copy of your report from each company once annually, and since the report should have the same information across all three if it’s accurate, we recommend getting a new report from each company every four months. It should only take a few minutes to review so doing this three times a year shouldn’t be a problem.

Credit Score

There are different formulas for calculating a credit score but the main two are FICO and Vantage. Fortunately, the score range is the same for both (300 – 850) and both formulas are based on information coming from your credit report. This means, regardless of the formula used, or which company you’re getting your score from, it shouldn’t vary too much.

There are three places you can get your score from.

Your Bank: If you already have a credit card from a given bank, there’s a good chance they have a place where you can see your credit score. Simply login and see if they promote “FICO” or “Vantage” or “Credit Score” anywhere on the site.

The good thing about getting your score through your bank is you don’t have to create a separate account to check it and you already visit that site regularly. For these reasons this is our recommended method for checking your score.

A Credit Bureau: You can create a free account with Equifax, Experian, or TransUnion to see your credit score. The benefit of this is that if you’re going to have your credit checked by a potential lender, and you know the bureau they will use (although, sometimes they’ll check all three), having an account with that credit bureau gives you visibility into the score and report the lender will see.

The downside about the three bureaus sites is that they might charge you a fee to see your score (it’s usually only a $1). Even more annoyingly, their sites try really hard to get you to sign up for all kinds of other products you probably don’t need. This can make the process of getting your score annoying. Don’t be fooled and sign up for extra services or pay for something you could probably get for free elsewhere.

A Third Party: There are dozens of sites that will show your score for free. You’ve probably seen the advertisements too. CreditKarma.com, CreditSesame.com, and Discover Scorecard are just a few examples. These are all reputable sites and they each have a few features you may like too.

The downside to these sites is that they make their money through advertising when you see an ad or click through on one. Because of this, they do everything they can to target you with products they think you’ll sign up for. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing (you may actually find some great offers). But if you’re the type of person that may be tempted based on offers for “cash back” or credit card rewards, you may want to get your score elsewhere.

Conclusion

There’s no right or wrong place to get your score as long as it’s from a reputable site and it’s convenient for you. You’ll probably want to check your score at least once a month so using a site that’s easy to navigate and explains your score well is just about as important as anything else.

But for your convenience, we’ve summarized the most important details below.

What is a Credit Score?

Your Credit Score is a number that impacts the interest rates you pay any time you borrow money (like if you borrow money to buy a car or a house or have a credit card). Generally, the lower your score, the higher your interest rate, and the more you’ll ultimately have to pay when you buy something using a loan. The higher your score, the lower your interest rate and the less you’ll have to pay.

Importantly, credit scores and reports are not only used by people who are considering lending you money. They are also used by potential employers, landlords etc. to get a sense of your level of responsibility.

Why You Should Check Your Score

Checking your score and/or report can help you spot errors or outright fraud. For example, an unpaid balance on a fraudulently opened card would cause your score to drop. Additionally, knowing your score can help you discover loans or credit cards you may be eligible for. You want to ensure you’re getting the best rates on loans and the best rewards on cards you’re eligible for.

Credit Reporting Bureaus

There are three bureaus that report your score: Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion. While their exact formulas slightly differ, assuming they have the same data, your scores from each should be pretty close.

The Difference Between Your “Credit Score” and “Credit Report”

Your score is simply a number and the report shows the details of why you have that score. The report includes things like when you’ve applied for a loan or line of credit, your existing debt, and associated debt payment history. Depending on who’s checking, they will either get access to your score or a version of your credit report. For example, potential employers can get an “Employment Insight Report” that contains less information than a report you pull for yourself and these reports never contain your credit score.

Credit Score Ranges

Credit scores range from 300 up to 850 and higher scores are always better. That being said, in most instances a few points up or down will not make a difference. Before applying for a loan or line of credit, ask the lender what credit range will get you a particular rate. If you’re well above that range you don’t need to worry about a few points here or there. If you’re below it, you know what you need to shoot for.

Factors that Affect Your Credit Score

Every credit reporting agency has a slightly different formula. But each uses an element of the five factors listed here. In order of importance they include:

Payment History

This is the most important factor. In fact, even a single missed payment can be detrimental. This is why it’s so important to at least pay the minimum owed every single time. If your payment is late, you will be charged a fee (boo!), but it won’t count as “missed” until it’s 30 days late.

Amount Owed

This is usually based on a “credit utilization ratio” across all your accounts. In other words, if you owe $5,000 and your total available credit is $15,000, your utilization ratio is 33.3%. The lower the ratio the better because it shows you know how to use only what you need. A utilization ratio above 30% tends to be seen negatively and those with the highest credit scores tend to have ratios in the single digits.

But remember that your credit score is a snapshot in time. Therefore if you look at your score right before you pay your credit card bill, it will be worse than if you check after you pay your bill. Keep this in mind before applying for a loan and make sure to pay off any balances you can before having your credit pulled.

Credit History

The longer your credit history, the better. However, before the young folks get upset about not having had the chance to develop a long history, remember that this factor is only about half as important as the first two. Credit history is usually based on the average age of all your credit accounts. Therefore make sure you keep your oldest credit card open (even if you don’t use it) since this line of credit will increase the average credit history length.

Credit Mix

Handling different types of credit responsibly is another sign that you are responsible. A diversified mix of credit could include credit cards, student loans, auto loans, a mortgage etc. Does this mean you need to acquire more debt to diversify your credit mix? Not necessarily. But if you plan on using debt at some point (e.g. to buy a home), be aware that you may want to build a history with a mix of credit types even if you only use some sparingly.

New Credit & “Hard” Inquiries

Opening a bunch of new credit or having a bunch of “hard inquiries” from lenders, negatively affects your score. Fortunately, these impacts only last a short time and shouldn’t impact your score very much. Additionally, if you’re shopping for a mortgage, note that you have a special 45 day window. During this time, all of the inquiries from potential lenders will only count as one. As a result, this gives you the ability to comparison shop without making your score worse as you go.

Give it time.

Your Credit Score Matters…But Only Up to a Point

Your score is good for showing lenders, landlords, and employers that you’re responsible. But it’s not good for things like impressing your date or cocktail party conversation. And nobody is going to give you a trophy when it reaches a certain point. In fact, the personal finance industry focuses way too much on the credit score. Just check your score and report for errors and be aware of your score’s impact when applying for credit. If you do the right things in the rest of your financial life, your score will improve in the long run.

Whether you want to set a goal for how much you earn, save, or spend, it’s all part of your cashflow. And whether you earn as much as Bill Gates or you currently have a lower paying job, everyone must manage their cashflow to achieve sound financial health.
For each category (income, saving, spending) Budget Planner uses “Net” dollars. That means the after-tax dollars that you actually have available to you.

Net Savings: Use this category to track liquid cash savings, or after tax retirement account savings (like in a Roth IRA). For example, if you’re building up an emergency fund, track how much you put into that account each month.

Spending: Almost all forms of spending are “net spending.” This is because spending generally happens with after-tax dollars. Go to dinner and the movies? Both are “net spending” dollars.

How to Use It

Here’s a one-minute overview video of Budget Planner. Budget Planner is broken into three steps, each with their own tab: Plan, Update, and Review.

Plan Tab:

Watch the Plan Tab video: This video covers much of the detail you need for the Plan tab of Budget Planner.

Determine the timeframe you want to track your goals for based on the start and end months. (Your plan will always start on the first day of the first month and end on the last day of the last month.)

We recommend setting a plan for as short as three months, or up to one year.

Since cashflow fluctuates, plans less than three months don’t allow for natural variability between months. A plan for more than a year doesn’t allow for likely changes to your income or spending habits.

Enter planned net income: Enter all the sources of income you want to track and how often you receive that income. For the amount, enter a “ballpark” figure. For example, if you get a paycheck twice a month and sometimes it’s a little higher or lower based on taxes taken out or for other reasons, don’t sweat it. Enter the typical amount (or a figure slightly lower if you want to be conservative) and move on. You’re simply trying to set a goal based on the rough amount of income you expect.

You can also take a “mixed approach” and track some things by category (for example rent or mortgage payments), and some things by account. If you do this, just make sure you don’t double counting spending that is within both a category and an account.

Review your “Plan Balance Check”: This shows you if your plan is balanced. Specifically, it shows how your planned saving and spending compare to your planned income. If planned saving and spending are greater than income, your graph will extend beyond the “balance line.” It will also tell you how much your plan is imbalanced by so you can adjust it if desired.

Note: You do not need to have a balanced plan. Perhaps you’re a student and have very little or no income. Or perhaps you are simply comfortable drawing down your savings while you take a break from regular work. In either case, your spending would be more than your income. But you can still use this tool to set budget planning and cashflow goals.

Update Tab

Watch the Update Tab video: This video covers much of the detail you need for the Update tab of Budget Planner.

This is where you update your actual income, saving, and spending. You’ll compare your actual values to your planned values. Simply enter the actual values for the month, and click save.

A Few Notes

Since all plans are based on monthly averages for income, saving, and spending, you only need to update your numbers once a month. However if it’s easier, you can update your numbers as they change. This might be easier if you track spending by category (as opposed to by account). For example if you track “Food” as a category, and you spend $10 on a lunch one day, you could update your number for “Food” by adding $10 to the previous total. (And again, if you find this too cumbersome, we recommend tracking spending by account…see above.)

Don’t worry if your numbers are a little (or even a lot) off for a given month. As long as you understand why the number may be different that month (e.g. your side gig income was less because you were traveling half the month or your spending was higher because you bought an appliance etc.). The only thing that really matters is if you can get on track by the end of your goal’s timeframe.

It will also tell you how much you need to earn, save, or spend to hit your goal by the end of your timeframe. Your pacing bar moves daily. For income and savings, it will show you as “On Track” if your totals are in front of the pacing bar or at least within the current month. For spending, it will show you as “On Track” if your totals are behind the pacing bar or within the current month.

If you’re way off track and have no chance of achieving a goal, go back to the “Plan” tab and update your goal! Budget Planner is not about perfection. But in the long run, a history synced only monthly is likely to be more than fine.

When to Use It

You can sync your accounts and save the data to your historical record as often or as little as you like. We recommend saving your data between once a week and once a month. The goal is to build your historical record over time. For most people, a breakdown more detailed than weekly simply isn’t necessary.

Remember: With MoneySwell, your historical record will automatically save information from the Accounts tab once daily. However, you still control updates to the Accounts tab (based on when you sync your linked accounts or when you update your manual accounts). In this sense only you control what goes into your historical record. We suggest doing a regular update to your accounts near the end of the month. If you forget, you can always update your historical record by clicking the link below the graph on the Historical tab.

The Historical Tab

While the “Accounts Tab” is where you enter your information, the “Historical Tab” is where you can see your data building over time. Your account data is is broken into assets and liabilities and shown over the time period you select. Your net worth is calculated for you.

Remember: Your “Net Worth” is the value of all your assets, minus all your liabilities.
