<h3><span style="font-weight: 400;">End-of-Year Budgeting: Three Simple Ways to Win</span></h3>
<h4><span style="color: #26273f;"><b>Focus on Awareness, Not Perfection (The “Jesse” Method)</b></span></h4>
<ul>
<li aria-level="2"><b>The Challenge: </b><span style="font-weight: 400;">Jesse often spends more than she earns in November and December, which causes stress.</span></li>
<li aria-level="2"><b>The MoneySwell Fix: </b><span style="font-weight: 400;">She uses Budget Planner to create a two-month plan and realizes her total imbalance is $1,500. Because her savings the rest of the year cover this amount, she can now spend comfortably, knowing her overall financial picture is healthy.</span></li>
<li aria-level="2"><b>The Takeaway:</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> A plan—even an imperfect one—gives you confidence and reduces stress by showing you what your budget can truly handle.</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"><br />
</span><b></b></li>
</ul>
<h4><span style="color: #26273f;"><b>Track Only What Matters (The &#8220;Jane&#8221; Method)</b></span></h4>
<ul>
<li aria-level="2"><b>The Challenge: </b><span style="font-weight: 400;">Jane wants to track her holiday gift spending for 15 people but hates tracking every single expense.</span></li>
<li aria-level="2"><b>The MoneySwell Fix: </b><span style="font-weight: 400;">Instead of a full budget, she only creates specific categories in Budget Planner for her 15 gift recipients. She syncs her transactions a few times per month and ignores all transactions unrelated to gift-giving. Her dashboard shows her overall gift spending and a breakdown by person.</span></li>
<li aria-level="2"><b>The Takeaway: </b><span style="font-weight: 400;">You don&#8217;t have to overhaul your life. Track only the &#8220;end-of-year extras&#8221; to keep your most vulnerable spending areas in check.</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"><br />
</span></li>
</ul>
<h4><span style="color: #26273f;"><b>Two Months is Enough (The “Taylor” Method)</b></span></h4>
<ul>
<li aria-level="2"><b>The Challenge: </b><span style="font-weight: 400;">Taylor wants to max out his 401(k) and HSA contributions this year but is nervous about running out of cash before January 1st.</span></li>
<li aria-level="2"><b>The MoneySwell Fix: </b><span style="font-weight: 400;">He decides to use the Budget Planner for just November and December. By creating a temporary plan, he confirms that, while tight, he </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">can</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;"> cover her expenses and max out his savings goals.</span></li>
<li aria-level="2"><b>The Takeaway: </b><span style="font-weight: 400;">MoneySwell is perfect for short-term financial sprints. Use it for these critical two months to ensure you hit your major year-end financial targets.</span></li>
</ul>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">There’s no “one way to budget.” But by putting healthy awareness on your cash flow, you can reduce stress, keep your balance sheet healthy, and genuinely enjoy whatever you choose to spend your money on.</span></p>

Additionally, in the “Growth” tier we provided a generalized recommendation to save “as much as you can” or “10-15%” of your pretax income for long-term/retirement savings. <img decoding="async" class="alignright size-fusion-400 wp-image-2204" src="https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_279957448-400x267.jpeg" alt="" width="400" height="267" srcset="https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_279957448-200x134.jpeg 200w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_279957448-300x200.jpeg 300w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_279957448-400x267.jpeg 400w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_279957448-600x401.jpeg 600w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_279957448-768x513.jpeg 768w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_279957448-800x534.jpeg 800w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_279957448-1024x684.jpeg 1024w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_279957448-1200x801.jpeg 1200w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_279957448-1536x1025.jpeg 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px" /></span></p>
<p><b><i>But take note:</i></b> <span style="font-weight: 400;">This is the last time we’ll provide a </span><em><span style="font-weight: 400;">generalized</span></em><span style="font-weight: 400;"> recommendation for increasing your savings rate. After this your tasks will be based on specific calculations to ensure you hit your goals.</span></p>
<h3 id="toc_Savings_Benchmarks_for_Longterm_Investments">Savings Benchmarks for Long-term Investments</h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Having something to shoot for can be helpful even when attempting to complete a generalized task like “increase your savings rate.” The items below represent possible benchmarks for how much you can increase your savings by. Choose one that works for you and your budget or something else entirely. But push yourself to go for the largest one you can.</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"><br />
</span></p>
<ul>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><b>Debt Payments: </b><span style="font-weight: 400;">If you previously had debt that you paid off in the Growth tier, use whatever amount you were putting toward debt payments to now put toward long-term saving.</span></li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li aria-level="1"><b>Emergency Fund Payments: </b><span style="font-weight: 400;">If you previously set savings rate to grow your emergency fund, and your emergency fund is now between 3 and 6 months, consider diverting those payments &#8211; or 50-75% of them to long-term savings. How much you divert will depend on your comfort level with your existing emergency fund, your desire to grow it further, and the pace you still want to see your emergency fund grow (if at all).</span></li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li aria-level="1"><b>A Net 3% Increase: </b><span style="font-weight: 400;">If your previous long-term savings rate was 6%, a 3% net increase would bring it up to 9%. If it was 9%, a net 3% increase would bring it up to 12% etc. Whatever your starting point, 3% is likely to feel just noticeable but not hurt too much and will help you boost your long-term savings.</span></li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li aria-level="1"><b>$100, $200, $300: </b><span style="font-weight: 400;">Simple, round numbers like these are easy to quantify and adjust to in your budget. In the long run, they can have a great impact on your long-term savings.</span></li>
</ul>
<h3 id="toc_Ways_to_Save_More">Ways to Save More</h3>
<p>If you’re finding you don’t have funds to increase your savings rate by any amount, use the <a href="https://app.moneyswell.com/budgetPlanner">Budget Planner</a> tool to review your income and expenses.</p>
<ul>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><b>Expenses: </b><span style="font-weight: 400;">Have you experienced “lifestyle creep” as your financial situation improved? If so, that’s understandable and possibly even acceptable. But take a moment to think about the areas of “creep” you get real value from vs. those expenses that have crept higher simply due to laziness or convenience without adding much value.<img decoding="async" class="size-fusion-400 wp-image-2205 alignleft" src="https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_332423799-400x267.jpeg" alt="" width="400" height="267" srcset="https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_332423799-200x133.jpeg 200w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_332423799-300x200.jpeg 300w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_332423799-400x267.jpeg 400w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_332423799-600x400.jpeg 600w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_332423799-768x513.jpeg 768w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_332423799-800x534.jpeg 800w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_332423799-1024x683.jpeg 1024w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_332423799-1200x801.jpeg 1200w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_332423799-1536x1025.jpeg 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px" /></span><span style="font-weight: 400;"><br />
</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"><br />
</span><span style="font-weight: 400;">If you have other very legitimate reasons for increased expenses (e.g. a new child in the family, medical costs etc.), acknowledge that. There&#8217;s nothing wrong with a leading a life that costs more than the life you lead before. However, you should also acknowledge your desire to save more for your future. Once you&#8217;ve done this, you can confidently move on to thinking about ways you can grow your income. </span></li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li aria-level="1"><b>Income: </b><span style="font-weight: 400;">If your income has stagnated or dropped, you’ll need to find ways to increase your income if you want to save more. Take a moment to consider if your best avenue is through </span><b>existing employment, new employment, or some kind of side gig work</b><span style="font-weight: 400;">. Once you’ve decided the path you want to take, focus your efforts on that track since it’s the focus that is most likely to drive meaningful results. You can always change your tactic later (e.g. you didn’t get the promotion at your existing job but you learned something along the way and you can now focus on finding a new job with a different employer). </span></li>
</ul>
<h3 id="toc_Summary">Summary</h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Remember, this is the last task where your plan gives you the flexibility to increase your long-term savings by a </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">generalized</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;"> amount. In the next task you’ll be faced with specific numbers that you’ll likely need to hit to achieve your goals. If you&#8217;re already using the <a href="https://app.moneyswell.com/retirement" target="_blank" rel="noopener">MoneySwell Retirement Planner</a>, remember not to get discouraged if even this new savings amount doesn&#8217;t put you on track. We recommend reading <a href="https://www.moneyswell.com/help-articles/how-to-project-your-future-outlook-for-retirement-planning/#toc_Examples" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the examples of different life phases outlined here</a> to clearly see how a person might move from being &#8220;off track&#8221; at one point, to being &#8220;on track&#8221; later.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">All that said, the more you save and the earlier you save it, the better off you&#8217;re likely to be. So, push yourself to save as much as you can now and get creative with how you do it. Doing so will make it that much easier to check off your future long-term savings tasks.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Research shows that when you set a date for achieving a goal, you are more likely to do it. In fact, in the SMART goals framework, the “T” stands for “Timely.” Therefore when it comes to your debt, you want to know precisely when you’re going to pay it off. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">When you calculate your debt payoff dates, you may have one of two reactions (and both can be useful). <img decoding="async" class="alignright size-fusion-400 wp-image-2319" src="https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_285490779-400x267.jpeg" alt="" width="400" height="267" srcset="https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_285490779-200x133.jpeg 200w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_285490779-300x200.jpeg 300w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_285490779-400x267.jpeg 400w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_285490779-600x400.jpeg 600w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_285490779-768x512.jpeg 768w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_285490779-800x533.jpeg 800w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_285490779-1024x683.jpeg 1024w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_285490779-1200x800.jpeg 1200w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_285490779-1536x1024.jpeg 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px" /></span></p>
<ol>
<li><b>Pleasantly Surprised: </b><span style="font-weight: 400;">Because debt can feel overwhelming, it’s not uncommon to ignore it and just pay whatever you have to, and slowly chip away at it (this can be particularly true if you haven’t consolidated your debts). But when you take the time to calculate when you’ll actually be done paying it off, something that once felt like it was going to take forever, may now feel like it&#8217;s within your grasp to pay off in the near future. </span><span style="font-weight: 400;"><br />
</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"><br />
</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">If you find yourself in this position, you may be motivated to up your payments or, if possible, make a one time lump sum payment to be rid of it entirely. At the very least, you should feel a sense of satisfaction for seeing how far you’ve come.</span></span></li>
<li><b>Scarily Shocked: </b>If you find yourself feeling this way after you’ve calculated your payoff dates, take a moment and remember this: <b><img decoding="async" class=" wp-image-2320 alignleft" style="font-weight: 400;" src="https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_234687186-400x500.jpeg" alt="" width="209" height="261" srcset="https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_234687186-200x250.jpeg 200w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_234687186-240x300.jpeg 240w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_234687186-400x500.jpeg 400w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_234687186-600x750.jpeg 600w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_234687186-768x960.jpeg 768w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_234687186-800x1000.jpeg 800w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_234687186-819x1024.jpeg 819w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_234687186-1200x1500.jpeg 1200w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_234687186-1229x1536.jpeg 1229w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_234687186-1638x2048.jpeg 1638w" sizes="(max-width: 209px) 100vw, 209px" /></b> Many have been in your exact position before and come out the other side. You too can get there. Additionally,<b> </b>you’re already taking the first and <i>most difficult </i>step: you’re facing your challenge head on.</li>
</ol>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">If you find yourself in this position, use the </span><b>MoneySwell Budget Planner tool</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> to figure out what changes you may be able to make to your income or spending so you can pay your debt off faster. (Consider adding a row within the “Spending” category for your debt minimum payments. Then, add a row in the “Savings” category that represents extra debt payments.) </span></p>
<h3 id="toc_Action">Action</h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In the notes section above, write down your:</span></p>
<ul>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Original debt payoff dates before any adjustments you may make</span></li>

You can track spending by spending category, or, by account (i.e. <em>I typically spend this much from this account each month</em>). <a href="https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/MoneySwell-17.jpg"><img decoding="async" class="alignleft wp-image-6777 " src="https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/MoneySwell-17.jpg" alt="" width="511" height="392" srcset="https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/MoneySwell-17-200x154.jpg 200w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/MoneySwell-17-300x230.jpg 300w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/MoneySwell-17-400x307.jpg 400w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/MoneySwell-17-600x461.jpg 600w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/MoneySwell-17-768x590.jpg 768w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/MoneySwell-17-800x614.jpg 800w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/MoneySwell-17-1024x786.jpg 1024w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/MoneySwell-17-1200x922.jpg 1200w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/MoneySwell-17-1536x1180.jpg 1536w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/MoneySwell-17.jpg 2560w" sizes="(max-width: 511px) 100vw, 511px" /></a>Follow these steps:</span></p>
<ol>
<li aria-level="1">Enter the amount you would like to <strong>save</strong> in a given month.</li>
<li aria-level="1">Enter the amount you typically <strong>spend</strong> each month from all of your accounts <em><strong>&#8211; or &#8211; </strong></em>enter your spending on a per-category basis.</li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Add your total savings and total expense numbers together. </span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Multiply that by number 3,4,5 or 6 (whatever the number of months you’re hoping to save for is). </span></li>
</ol>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">You now have three to six months worth of </span><b><i>planned</i></b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> savings and expenses. <strong>This is your Emergency Fund Growth savings goal.</strong></span></p>
<h3>Track Your Actual Expenses Using the Review Tab</h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">If you have been using Budget Planner for multiple months, you can use the data of your <em>actual spending </em>from the <strong>Review tab</strong>. Since this represents actual spending, it may provide the most accurate representation of what you&#8217;ll need for a 3-6 month emergency fund. After entering however many </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">full</span></i> <span style="font-weight: 400;">months (partial months entries will distort your numbers) of </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">actual</span></i> <span style="font-weight: 400;">saving and spending data you want in the <strong>Update</strong> tab, go to the <strong>Review</strong> tab and follow these steps:</span></p>
<ol>
<li aria-level="1">On the <strong>Update tab</strong>, ensure you have entered multiple months of accurate spending records. (We recommend at least three.)</li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Go to the <strong>Review tab </strong>and add your total saving and total spending from the graph. </span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Divide that number by however many <em>full months</em> of data you have. This will give you your actual </span><b><i>average</i></b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> monthly savings and expenses.</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Multiple that number by 3, 4, 5, or 6 (whatever number of months you’re hoping to save for).</span></li>
</ol>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">You now have three to six months worth of </span><b><i>actual </i></b><span style="font-weight: 400;">saving and expenses. <strong>This is your emergency fund Growth savings goal.</strong></span></p>
<h3>Why include the “savings” number in your Emergency Fund goal?</h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">It’s easy to forget and can even seem counterintuitive to include a “savings” number in your calculation for your emergency fund goal. But there are great reasons to do this. Here are two.</span></p>
<h4>One &#8211; Health Insurance is a Cost</h4>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">For many people, an emergency fund acts like a job loss fund. That is to say, <em>“If I lost my job tomorrow, how long could I survive before I needed to start earning income again?</em>” But for many Americans, a job provides more than income; it provides health insurance. And health insurance costs money. Remember: even if you pay for </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">some</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;"> of your health insurance, whether you’ve realized it or not, many employers will pay for part of those costs on your behalf (this should show up on your paystub if you get health insurance through your employer).</span></p>
<div id="attachment_2325" style="width: 410px" class="wp-caption alignleft"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-2325" class="size-fusion-400 wp-image-2325" src="https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_299736597-400x267.jpeg" alt="" width="400" height="267" srcset="https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_299736597-200x133.jpeg 200w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_299736597-300x200.jpeg 300w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_299736597-400x267.jpeg 400w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_299736597-600x400.jpeg 600w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_299736597-768x512.jpeg 768w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_299736597-800x534.jpeg 800w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_299736597-1024x683.jpeg 1024w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_299736597-1200x800.jpeg 1200w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_299736597-1536x1025.jpeg 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px" /><p id="caption-attachment-2325" class="wp-caption-text"><em>A full accounting of expenses may include the full cost of health insurance &#8211; something you would have to bear if you lost your job.</em></p></div>
<h4><span style="font-weight: 400;">If you lose your job, you’ll need to pay those costs yourself or pay for a new health insurance plan. Either way, by including  savings in your calculation, you&#8217;re giving yourself extra cushion for expenses you may not have been thinking about. </span><span style="font-weight: 400;"><br />
</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"><br />
</span>Two &#8211; Keep Your Savings on Track</h4>
<p><b> </b><span style="font-weight: 400;">The idea of an emergency fund is to keep you &#8220;on track&#8221; when something unexpected happens. Staying “on track” may mean not having to go into credit card debt. Or it may mean not having to sell retirement investments in order to make ends meet. </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">But one of the most important things to keep “on track” is your savings plan. </span></p>
<p>Your savings plan may include long-term goals like retirement, or medium-term goals like vacations or a new car. But whatever you&#8217;re saving for, by including that number in your calculation at the outset, you&#8217;re making your emergency fund that much larger and stronger should something go awry.</p>
<h3>Conclusion</h3>
<div id="attachment_2324" style="width: 310px" class="wp-caption alignright"><a href="https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_281440309-scaled.jpeg"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-2324" class="size-medium wp-image-2324" src="https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_281440309-300x200.jpeg" alt="" width="300" height="200" srcset="https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_281440309-200x133.jpeg 200w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_281440309-300x200.jpeg 300w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_281440309-400x267.jpeg 400w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_281440309-600x400.jpeg 600w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_281440309-768x512.jpeg 768w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_281440309-800x533.jpeg 800w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_281440309-1024x683.jpeg 1024w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_281440309-1200x800.jpeg 1200w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_281440309-1536x1024.jpeg 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /></a><p id="caption-attachment-2324" class="wp-caption-text"><em>A 3-6 month emergency fund will give you a new level of confidence&#8230;even on the inevitable rainy day.</em></p></div>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Fully funding an emergency fund at the Growth stage is a major accomplishment. If you’ve accomplished this, well done! If you&#8217;re on your way there, don’t shortchange yourself by being too optimistic and saving less than you ought to. Assume the worst and if things turn out not to be so bad, you won’t mind that you had built in a little extra buffer!</span></p>

<h3>Plan Tab</h3>
<div id="attachment_6774" style="width: 489px" class="wp-caption alignright"><a href="https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/MoneySwell-16.jpg"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-6774" class="wp-image-6774 " src="https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/MoneySwell-16.jpg" alt="" width="479" height="267" srcset="https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/MoneySwell-16-200x112.jpg 200w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/MoneySwell-16-300x167.jpg 300w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/MoneySwell-16-400x223.jpg 400w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/MoneySwell-16-600x335.jpg 600w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/MoneySwell-16-768x428.jpg 768w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/MoneySwell-16-800x446.jpg 800w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/MoneySwell-16-1024x571.jpg 1024w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/MoneySwell-16-1200x669.jpg 1200w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/MoneySwell-16-1536x857.jpg 1536w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/MoneySwell-16.jpg 2126w" sizes="(max-width: 479px) 100vw, 479px" /></a><p id="caption-attachment-6774" class="wp-caption-text"><em>In this example plan, the user could potentially save $200 more a month.</em></p></div>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Look at the graph at the bottom of the “Plan” tab. If your plan doesn&#8217;t extend past the balance line, consider increasing your automatic funding by the extra amount. If your plan is perfectly balanced or slightly imbalanced, review your other expenses and see if it&#8217;s possible to cut back. Lastly, consider if there are any ways you can increase your income. Every dollar you increase your income by is a dollar you can allocate toward saving.</span></p>
<h3>Update Tab</h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">If you have a few months of data entered, go to the “Update” tab and look through a few months. Look at the graph and see how your </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">actual </span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;">income and your </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">actual </span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;">spending compare. If you’re regularly earning more than what you’re spending and saving, take some portion of that difference and use that to increase your savings.</span></p>
<p><b>For example:</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> If your net earnings average $2,000 per month, and your net expenditures average $1,500 per month, you could conceivably save a total of $500 a month ($2,0000 &#8211; $1,500). But if your automatic savings transfer is only $200 a month, you have an additional $300 you could contribute. Since spending and income may fluctuate from month to month, we wouldn’t recommend allocating the full $300. But you may feel comfortable with and increase of half that amount.</span></p>
<h3>Review Tab</h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">If you don’t feel comfortable increasing your </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">automatic</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;"> savings transfer, go to the “Review” tab and look at the “Spending” bar. If your spending is behind the dotted line, hover over that line to see what your “pace spending” would be. Then, subtract your actual spending from your pace spending. The difference is the amount you can make as a </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">one time transfer</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;">.</span></p>
<div id="attachment_2327" style="width: 410px" class="wp-caption alignright"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-2327" class="size-fusion-400 wp-image-2327" src="https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_295929680-400x267.jpeg" alt="" width="400" height="267" srcset="https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_295929680-200x133.jpeg 200w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_295929680-300x200.jpeg 300w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_295929680-400x267.jpeg 400w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_295929680-600x400.jpeg 600w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_295929680-768x512.jpeg 768w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_295929680-800x533.jpeg 800w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_295929680-1024x683.jpeg 1024w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_295929680-1200x800.jpeg 1200w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_295929680-1536x1024.jpeg 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px" /><p id="caption-attachment-2327" class="wp-caption-text"><em>If the Review tab shows you&#8217;re better than goal pace with spending, consider a lump sum transfer of the difference.</em></p></div>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><br />
</span><b>For example:</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> If your “pace spending” says you could have spent up to $600 by this point but you’ve only spent $475, that means you are ahead of pace by $125 and should be able to make a one time transfer of up to $125 to your emergency fund. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Do this every month or every few months to ensure you’re growing your emergency fund. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">If you’re able to do this consistently, every once in a while you may want to reward yourself by taking a portion of the amount you </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">could </span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;">allocate to savings and treat yourself guilt-free to something special. This is up to your own psychology but if an occasional reward helps keep you on track, go for it! After all, you’ve earned it with your good habits!</span></p>
<h3>Take Action</h3>
<p>Go to your bank&#8217;s website and either make an update to your regular scheduled transfers or make a one-time transfer based on what you&#8217;re currently able to do. If you plan to make additional one time transfers in the months ahead, set a reminder on your phone or calendar.</p>

<li><strong>Add Essential Expenses: </strong>Go to your <a href="https://app.moneyswell.com/budgetPlanner" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Budget Planner dashboard</a> (available to logged in users) and use a calculator to add up all expenses that are truly “Essential” (see below for guidance). Don’t forget to include some portion of “Essential” expenses that occur less than once a month.</li>
<li><strong>Add Net Income: </strong>Next, add up all your net income. “Net income” is the money you actually receive after taxes and other deductions are taken out. Just like with expenses, you may want to include some portion of income that you receive less frequently than monthly.</li>
<li><strong>Review the Difference: </strong>If your Essential Expenses is greater than your total “Net Income”, you’ll need to find ways to increase your income or reduce your expenses by at least the difference of these two numbers.</li>
</ol>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Now, let’s take a closer look at what to include in “Essential Expenses” and “Income.”</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"><br />
</span><b></b></p>
<h3 id="toc_Typical_Essential_Expenses">Typical Essential Expenses</h3>
<ul>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><b>Housing</b> <b>&#8211;</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> typically rent or mortgage</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><b>Food</b> <b>&#8211;</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> just the essentials. Ideally this is a bit more than rice, beans, and ramen but it certainly shouldn’t include fancy cocktails or expensive meals on the town if those could be supplemented with lower-cost options or forgone entirely.<img decoding="async" class="alignright size-fusion-400 wp-image-2143" src="https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_246130657-400x219.jpeg" alt="" width="400" height="219" srcset="https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_246130657-200x109.jpeg 200w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_246130657-300x164.jpeg 300w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_246130657-400x219.jpeg 400w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_246130657-600x328.jpeg 600w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_246130657-768x420.jpeg 768w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_246130657-800x437.jpeg 800w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_246130657-1024x560.jpeg 1024w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_246130657-1200x656.jpeg 1200w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_246130657-1536x840.jpeg 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px" /></span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><b>Utilities</b> <b>&#8211;</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> at a minimum this will include electricity, heating, water but you may also want to include a cell phone bill and internet service.</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><b>Transportation &#8211; </b><span style="font-weight: 400;">gasoline, public transit costs (including monthly passes) and insurance (if you drive your own vehicle).</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><b>Debt &#8211; </b><span style="font-weight: 400;">including the minimum amount due to all loans and credit cards. </span><b>Note:</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> The minimum amount due on a credit card is typically a percentage of the total balance and can therefore fluctuate. If you have outstanding credit card debt consider transferring this to a single card and having a different card that you pay off in full every month. Then, only include the outstanding credit card debt payment in your “Essential </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">Debt</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;"> Expenses” (all other essential expenses &#8211; regardless of how they are charged and paid for &#8211; should fall into one of the previously mentioned categories).</span></li>
<li aria-level="1"><strong>Childcare &#8211; </strong>If you have a child, and you need childcare to be able to do your job and earn income, this is an essential expense.</li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><b>Savings* </b><span style="font-weight: 400;">&#8211; includes any money you take from your income and dedicate to saving. While not truly “essential”, and also not typically thought of as an “expense”, by including this as an essential expense, it can help you to build an emergency fund.</span></li>
</ul>
<h3 id="toc_Net_Income_Sources">Net Income Sources</h3>
<ul>
<li aria-level="1"><b>Job Income &#8211; </b><span style="font-weight: 400;">often comes in the form of a paycheck that &#8211; depending on your job and the consistency of hours &#8211; may be of a fairly regular amount.</span></li>
<li aria-level="1"><b>Tips &#8211; </b><span style="font-weight: 400;">depending on your job this could be a significant and fairly predictable source of net income.</span></li>
<li aria-level="1"><b>Side Gig &#8211; </b><span style="font-weight: 400;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">could include babysitting, dog walking, or anything that brings in income not from a regular source. Often this income may be irregular in amount and frequency so you’ll want to take the average based on typical low and high amounts (MoneySwell calculates this for you in Budget Planner).</span></span>
<div id="attachment_2144" style="width: 356px" class="wp-caption alignleft"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-2144" class="wp-image-2144" src="https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_267151144-400x243.jpeg" alt="Dog walking is a common side gig" width="346" height="210" srcset="https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_267151144-200x121.jpeg 200w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_267151144-300x182.jpeg 300w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_267151144-400x243.jpeg 400w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_267151144-600x364.jpeg 600w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_267151144-768x466.jpeg 768w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_267151144-800x485.jpeg 800w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_267151144-1024x621.jpeg 1024w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_267151144-1200x728.jpeg 1200w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/AdobeStock_267151144-1536x932.jpeg 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 346px) 100vw, 346px" /><p id="caption-attachment-2144" class="wp-caption-text"><em>Dog walking is a common side gig for many. Some even turn dog walking into a full time occupation! </em></p></div></li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li aria-level="1"><b>Government Income &#8211; </b><span style="font-weight: 400;">this could come from SNAP, Social Security, TANF, SSI, a pension etc. </span></li>
<li aria-level="1"><b>Support Income &#8211; </b><span style="font-weight: 400;">could include support from parents or other sources who may send you money either regularly or irregularly. </span></li>
<li aria-level="1"><b>Investment Income &#8211; </b><span style="font-weight: 400;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">could also include interest or dividend earnings from savings accounts or investments.</span></span></li>
<li aria-level="1"><b>Savings* &#8211; </b><span style="font-weight: 400;">if you are planning to draw money from your savings, consider how much you want to draw in total, and divide that by the number of months you plan to draw it. For example if you are able and willing to draw $2,000 from your savings, and you need it to last four months, you have $2000 / 4 = $500 a month of “income.”</span></li>
</ul>
<h3 id="toc_Conclusion">Conclusion</h3>
<p>Now that you know your essential expenses and your net income, you can compare the two. If your net income is greater than your essential expenses, you support yourself! If not, you&#8217;ll need to find ways to increase your income or reduce your expenses as discussed in other tasks in this plan.</p>

<h3>There&#8217;s Nothing Wrong with Getting Help</h3>
<p>If you are having trouble making ends meet, there are three possible solutions: You can earn more, spend less, or do a little of both. Therefore, before you commit to leveraging the financial support listed below, do a few Google searches to find creative ways to earn more income or reduce expenses. You may find some great ideas from other creative people out there with a situation not entirely different from your own.</p>
<p>That said, there are going to be times when you have done all you reasonably can. And if you’re in this situation, there are three things to do before you actually get the assistance you need. For each question below, write a brief answer in the notes field (available to <a href="http://www.moneyswell.com">logged in</a> users) above to help you frame your challenge.</p>
<h3>Why can&#8217;t I make ends meet?</h3>
<ul>
<li aria-level="1">The question may seem obvious but there are a variety of reasons you may find yourself in this situation. And that’s ok. What matters is that you’re honest with yourself. For example:</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li style="list-style-type: none;">
<ul>
<li aria-level="2">I&#8217;m getting ready to live on my own for the first time. I need to save money and learn how to live within my means.</li>
<li aria-level="2">I&#8217;m already fairly frugal but I need to earn more money.</li>
<li aria-level="2">I already earn decent income but I spend beyond my means on non-essential purchases.</li>
<li aria-level="2">I&#8217;ve had some unexpected expenses that have temporarily impacted my finances.</li>
<li aria-level="2">I&#8217;m using some of my income to pay for previously incurred debt.</li>
</ul>
</li>
</ul>
<p>Whatever the case may be, knowing the answer to this question may help you determine the type of support that&#8217;s best for you.</p>
<h3>What type of support do I need?</h3>
<ul>
<li aria-level="1">Even though your challenge is a financial one, there may be multiple ways to receive support.
<div id="attachment_2412" style="width: 410px" class="wp-caption alignright"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-2412" class="size-fusion-400 wp-image-2412" src="https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/AdobeStock_289036255-400x267.jpeg" alt="" width="400" height="267" srcset="https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/AdobeStock_289036255-200x133.jpeg 200w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/AdobeStock_289036255-300x200.jpeg 300w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/AdobeStock_289036255-400x267.jpeg 400w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/AdobeStock_289036255-600x400.jpeg 600w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/AdobeStock_289036255-768x512.jpeg 768w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/AdobeStock_289036255-800x533.jpeg 800w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/AdobeStock_289036255-1024x683.jpeg 1024w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/AdobeStock_289036255-1200x800.jpeg 1200w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/AdobeStock_289036255-1536x1024.jpeg 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px" /><p id="caption-attachment-2412" class="wp-caption-text"><em>Nobody has ever gotten anywhere without some help. Don&#8217;t be afraid to use all resources available to you.</em></p></div></p>
<p>For example:</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li style="list-style-type: none;">
<ul>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="2">A direct gift or grant that doesn’t need to be repaid</li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="2">A subsidy for a good or service you need (e.g. housing, food, utilities, childcare)</li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="2">An adjustment to the payment or repayment terms for a good or service (e.g. housing, food, utilities, childcare, medical debt)</li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="2">A loan that you will pay back in time</li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="2">A good or service you need you can barter for by offering something other than cash (e.g. you babysit or do errands for your friends for “free” while they let you stay at their house for a week or two).</li>
</ul>
</li>
</ul>
<h3>What is my post-support plan?</h3>
<ul>
<li aria-level="1">More specifically, what is your plan to repay the support you receive (if needed) or, what is your plan to get into a position such that you&#8217;ll no longer need the support? Depending on the support you need, this could be a short-term plan or a long-term plan. For example:</li>
</ul>
<ol>
<li style="list-style-type: none;">
<ul>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="2">Work more hours or get a second job or side gig to earn more money</li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="2">Get a new, better paying job or ask for a raise or promotion</li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="2">Take educational courses or training to be more qualified for a better job</li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="2">Finish paying off past debts so you can use your existing income to pay for your life today</li>
</ul>
</li>
</ol>
<p>There’s a good chance you’re already doing some of the suggestions listed above. And if that’s the case, let the resource that is providing you with additional support know! They will be glad to know you’re thinking ahead about how to improve your situation.</p>
<h3>Support Resources</h3>
<p>Now that you have a clearer idea of <strong>why</strong> you need support, the <strong>type</strong> of support you may need, and have a rough idea of your <strong>plan</strong> to eventually move beyond needing that extra support, you are ready to review the resources below and consider which ones may be appropriate for your situation.</p>
<ul>
<li aria-level="1"><b>Direct Cash: </b>This is likely to come directly from friends or family. You can ask them directly or you can set up online campaigns through sites like <a href="https://www.gofundme.com/">GoFundMe.</a></li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li aria-level="1"><b>Housing: </b>Search the web for terms like “local housing services” to find out about non-profits or government agencies in your area that may be able to offer long-term affordable housing options or temporary housing options.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li aria-level="1"><b>Food: </b>Sites like <a href="https://www.feedingamerica.org/find-your-local-foodbank">Feeding America</a> can help you find your local food bank and the U.S. government can provide help through the <a href="https://www.benefits.gov/benefit/361">Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program(SNAP).</a></li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li aria-level="1"><b>Services: </b><span style="font-weight: 400;">If you need help for essential services like household utilities (heat, water, electricity etc.) it’s best to contact the utility company directly and see if they can offer you a discounted rate. After that, contact your local city government offices to see if there are local programs available to help.</span></li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li aria-level="1"><b>Debt Owed: </b><span style="font-weight: 400;">If you have debt, you may want to contact the company you owe money to first and try to negotiate. If you’re not comfortable with that or you’ve already tried it, leverage the resources available on the </span><a href="https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0150-coping-debt"><span style="font-weight: 400;">U.S. Government’s FTC site</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> about dealing with debt. Whenever you’re searching for help with debt it’s best to ensure you’re getting your information from a reliable and trustworthy source.</span></li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li aria-level="1"><b>Loans: </b><span style="font-weight: 400;">If you had unexpected expenses or you know you will soon be able to make ends meet plus a bit more, taking out a temporary loan can be a reasonable option. Just make sure you are not creating a bigger problem than you already had. Depending on your situation, you may consider a Personal Loan (a great review of choices are </span><a href="https://www.creditkarma.com/personal-loans/i/best-short-term-loans"><span style="font-weight: 400;">here</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">), or a Home Equity Line of Credit (only an option if you own a home and owe less on it than what it’s worth).<br />
</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"><br />
</span></li>
<li aria-level="1"><strong>Unemployment Benefits: </strong>Depending on your situation, you may be eligible for unemployment benefits. Typically, unemployment provides a certain percentage of your wages from a previously held job, for specified period of time. Each state sets their own limits for how much you must have earned from that previous job to be eligible. Additionally, there may be other requirements like needing to prove you&#8217;re looking for new work. To find out if you&#8217;re eligible, search for &#8220;Unemployment Benefits&#8221; followed by your state&#8217;s name.</li>
</ul>
<h3>Benefits &amp; Drawbacks of Different forms of Support</h3>
<p>Finally, before you start taking a benefit from any of the resources available to you, consider some of the benefits and drawbacks of each. This may be helpful to discover the resource that is best for you.</p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">We’ve just covered the basics in this article but hopefully the picture is clear: If you&#8217;re struggling to make ends meet, there </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">are</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;"> resources available that can help you. Take the time to research online and find a good fit for the specific financial issue you’re facing. <strong>Don’t be ashamed to ask for help.</strong> Remember that there are many successful people who hit a rough patch and overcame it to become financially healthy and a whole lot more. You’re not alone and you will make progress!</span></p>

<li>We <em>highly</em> recommend tracking your expenses by account instead of spending category.</li>
<li>Tracking by account is faster (simply enter an average number for your spending for each account) and more accurate because you&#8217;re less likely to forget a spending category.</li>
<li>On the “Plan” tab of <a href="https://app.moneyswell.com/budgetPlanner" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Budget Planner</a>, in the spending section track your spending by each of your accounts, or spending categories.</li>
<li>You can customize your own account names or categories by typing in the drop down and selecting “Create New.”</li>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">We get it: Tracking expenses is annoying. Most people can’t stick with “tracking every dollar” for the long haul. That’s why in </span><a href="https://app.moneyswell.com/budgetPlanner"><span style="font-weight: 400;">the task to set up your Budget Planner dashboard</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, we described three different methods for tracking your spending:</span></p>
<ol>
<li>Track spending by account</li>
<li><span style="font-weight: 400;">Tracking spending by category</span></li>
<li><span style="font-weight: 400;">A mix of account and category tracking</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"><br />
</span></li>
</ol>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Many people start out tracking by category to get a sense of where they spend their money and then once they feel like they have a good handle on this they move to looking at total expenditures by account. It’s much easier to update and track just one spending number per account per month than to track every single category of spending.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Our recommendation is to try one method for two months and if it doesn’t work for you for whatever reason, try another method. </span></p>
<h3>Tracking by Account</h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">As previously stated in an earlier task:<img decoding="async" class="alignright size-fusion-400 wp-image-2414" src="https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/AdobeStock_119150718-400x267.jpeg" alt="" width="400" height="267" srcset="https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/AdobeStock_119150718-200x133.jpeg 200w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/AdobeStock_119150718-300x200.jpeg 300w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/AdobeStock_119150718-400x267.jpeg 400w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/AdobeStock_119150718-600x400.jpeg 600w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/AdobeStock_119150718-768x512.jpeg 768w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/AdobeStock_119150718-800x533.jpeg 800w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/AdobeStock_119150718-1024x683.jpeg 1024w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/AdobeStock_119150718-1200x800.jpeg 1200w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/AdobeStock_119150718-1536x1024.jpeg 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px" /></span></p>
<ol>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Look at the “Total Purchases” line on your monthly account statements. </span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Compare a few month’s worth of statements to get a good estimate of your low and high spending numbers. Or, you can calculate your average number between statements and enter that average number in both fields.</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Do steps one and two for each credit card and all checking accounts you regularly use.</span></li>
</ol>
<h3>Tracking by Category</h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Review the categories below and add your low and high estimates in for any that apply to you. If you don’t have any idea what you spend, many credit card and checking accounts have a section on the site that will break down your spending by category so take a look at that if you need help.</span></p>

<h3>Conclusion</h3>
<p>That&#8217;s it! You now have a plan set up for tracking your monthly expenses. If you track by account, you should be able to track your budget in about ten minutes per month. If you track by category, it will take you a bit longer but you&#8217;ll have a granular view of precisely where your money is going.</p>

<h3>Method #1 &#8211; Using the Plan Tab</h3>
<p><b> </b><span style="font-weight: 400;">In the Plan tab you can see your plan for average monthly saving, and expenses. Follow these steps:</span></p>
<ol>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Add your savings and expenses together. </span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">If you’re saving for multiple months, multiply that by the number of months you’re saving for.</span></span>

</ol>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">You now have one (or three) months worth of </span><b><i>planned</i></b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> savings and expenses. This is your Emergency Fund Security goal.</span></p>
<h4><span style="font-weight: 400;"><div class="fusion-menu-anchor" id="ReviewTab"></div></span></h4>
<h3>Method #2 &#8211; Using the Review Tab</h3>
<div id="attachment_6771" style="width: 481px" class="wp-caption alignright"><a href="https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/MoneySwell-15.jpg"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-6771" class="wp-image-6771 " src="https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/MoneySwell-15.jpg" alt="" width="471" height="138" srcset="https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/MoneySwell-15-200x59.jpg 200w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/MoneySwell-15-300x88.jpg 300w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/MoneySwell-15-400x117.jpg 400w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/MoneySwell-15-600x176.jpg 600w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/MoneySwell-15-768x225.jpg 768w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/MoneySwell-15-800x235.jpg 800w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/MoneySwell-15-1024x301.jpg 1024w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/MoneySwell-15-1200x352.jpg 1200w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/MoneySwell-15-1536x451.jpg 1536w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/MoneySwell-15.jpg 2146w" sizes="(max-width: 471px) 100vw, 471px" /></a><p id="caption-attachment-6771" class="wp-caption-text"><em>This user PLANNED to spend $3,900 per month ($46,800 / 12 = $3,900). However, over three months they&#8217;ve ACTUALLY spent an average of $4,341 ($13,024 / 3 = $4,341). To be safe, they should probably use the larger number as the basis for calculating their emergency fund.</em></p></div>
<p><b></b><span style="font-weight: 400;">After entering however many </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">full</span></i> <span style="font-weight: 400;">months (partial months entries will distort your numbers) of </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">actual</span></i> <span style="font-weight: 400;">saving and spending data you want in the Update tab, go to the Review tab and follow these steps:</span></p>
<ol>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Add your total saving and total spending from the graph. </span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Divide that number by however many full months of data you have. This will give you your actual </span><b><i>average</i></b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> monthly savings and expenses.</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Multiple that number by three (or whatever number of months you’re hoping to save for).</span></li>
</ol>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">You now have one (to three) months worth of </span><b><i>actual </i></b><span style="font-weight: 400;">saving and expenses. This is your emergency fund Security goal.</span></p>
<h3>Why include the “savings” number?</h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">It can seem counterintuitive to include a “savings” number in your calculation for your emergency fund goal. But there are great reasons to do this. Here are two.</span></p>
<p><b>Reason One:</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> An emergency fund can act as a job loss fund. Put differently, <em>“If I lost my job tomorrow, how long could I survive before I needed to start earning income again?”</em> But for many Americans, a job can also cover the cost of things like health insurance, a cell phone bill, a gym or transportation subsidy etc. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Whatever the case case, by including your monthly savings in your calculation, you have given yourself an extra cushion for additional expenses you may not have initially been thinking about. </span><span style="font-weight: 400;"><br />
</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"><br />
</span><b></b></p>
<div id="attachment_2388" style="width: 261px" class="wp-caption alignleft"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-2388" class=" wp-image-2388" src="https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/AdobeStock_127198476-400x577.jpeg" alt="" width="251" height="362" srcset="https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/AdobeStock_127198476-200x289.jpeg 200w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/AdobeStock_127198476-208x300.jpeg 208w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/AdobeStock_127198476-400x577.jpeg 400w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/AdobeStock_127198476-600x866.jpeg 600w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/AdobeStock_127198476-709x1024.jpeg 709w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/AdobeStock_127198476-768x1108.jpeg 768w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/AdobeStock_127198476-800x1155.jpeg 800w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/AdobeStock_127198476-1064x1536.jpeg 1064w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/AdobeStock_127198476-1200x1732.jpeg 1200w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/AdobeStock_127198476-1419x2048.jpeg 1419w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/AdobeStock_127198476-scaled.jpeg 1774w" sizes="(max-width: 251px) 100vw, 251px" /><p id="caption-attachment-2388" class="wp-caption-text"><em>Including your savings number in your emergency fund calculation gives you an extra buffer to stay on track if you have to dip into your emergency fund.</em></p></div>
<p><b>Reason Two: </b><span style="font-weight: 400;">The goal of an emergency fund is to keep you on track when something unexpected happens. “On track” can mean not having to go into credit card debt, not having to sell off a portion of your retirement savings in order to make ends meet, or, it can mean keeping on track with your savings.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Savings could be for long-term goals like retirement, or medium-term goals like vacations or a new car. (And of course, you may be saving for your emergency fund itself. In this last case, obviously you won’t keep putting money into your emergency fund at the same time you’re drawing it down should an emergency come to pass.) By including a savings number in your calculation at the outset, you&#8217;re working to build a larger emergency fund and one that is more likely to sustain you should something go awry. </span></p>
<h4><span style="font-weight: 400;"><div class="fusion-menu-anchor" id="Conclusion"></div></span></h4>
<h3>Conclusion</h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Fully funding an emergency fund for one to three months of expenses is a fantastic start! Unfortunately, more than half of Americans don’t have emergency savings for a $400 expense, let alone a full month or more of expenses. If you’ve met your Emergency Fund Security goal, great job! You can now check this off your list.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The MoneySwell Budget Planner tool is an easy budgeting tool. And since </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">spending</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;"> happens with after-tax dollars, this is the place to think about your </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">income</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;"> in after-tax dollars too (i.e. your “net” income). </span></p>
<h3 data-fontsize="28" data-lineheight="38.08px">Income Sources</h3>
<p><b><img decoding="async" class="size-fusion-400 wp-image-2419 alignleft" src="https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/AdobeStock_294970481-400x267.jpeg" alt="" width="400" height="267" srcset="https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/AdobeStock_294970481-200x133.jpeg 200w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/AdobeStock_294970481-300x200.jpeg 300w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/AdobeStock_294970481-400x267.jpeg 400w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/AdobeStock_294970481-600x400.jpeg 600w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/AdobeStock_294970481-768x512.jpeg 768w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/AdobeStock_294970481-800x533.jpeg 800w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/AdobeStock_294970481-1024x683.jpeg 1024w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/AdobeStock_294970481-1200x800.jpeg 1200w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/AdobeStock_294970481-1536x1024.jpeg 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px" />Employer Paycheck Income: </b><span style="font-weight: 400;">If you get a paycheck from an employer, taxes are deducted from your gross income automatically. Therefore all you need to do is look at the “Net” line of your paycheck and enter that value. Use the dropdown to select the frequency you’re paid that amount. </span></p>
<p><b>Self Employed or “Non” Paycheck Income: </b><span style="font-weight: 400;">If you’re self employed you’ll need to estimate your net income and ensure you’re allocating enough for taxes. The same applies to any other income you may receive like cash tips or side gig work.</span></p>
<p><b>Note:</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> If you want to project net income from a job you have not yet started or you’re not sure how much you should allocate for taxes for non-employer based pay, use a </span><a href="https://www.paycheckcity.com/calculator" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-weight: 400;">paycheck calculator</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. Remember if you’re planning to allocate a portion of your salary to a retirement fund, or if you will be paying for some of your health insurance costs, these will be subtracted from your gross income along with taxes before you know your final net income.</span></p>
<h3 data-fontsize="28" data-lineheight="38.08px">Notes on Frequency Choices</h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">For any choice you select from the “Frequency” drop-down, MoneySwell will calculate your monthly equivalent income for you. For example, if you’re paid $500 twice a month, MoneySwell will multiply $500 x 2 to show $1,000 of estimated income for the month. There are unique multipliers for each choice. They are as follows:</span></p>
<div id="attachment_2420" style="width: 410px" class="wp-caption alignright"><img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-2420" class="size-fusion-400 wp-image-2420" src="https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/AdobeStock_308172926-400x267.jpeg" alt="" width="400" height="267" srcset="https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/AdobeStock_308172926-200x133.jpeg 200w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/AdobeStock_308172926-300x200.jpeg 300w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/AdobeStock_308172926-400x267.jpeg 400w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/AdobeStock_308172926-600x400.jpeg 600w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/AdobeStock_308172926-768x512.jpeg 768w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/AdobeStock_308172926-800x534.jpeg 800w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/AdobeStock_308172926-1024x683.jpeg 1024w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/AdobeStock_308172926-1200x800.jpeg 1200w, https://www.moneyswell.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/AdobeStock_308172926-1536x1025.jpeg 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px" /><p id="caption-attachment-2420" class="wp-caption-text"><em>When in doubt, set a frequency slightly less often than you expect it might me. It&#8217;s always better to budget conservatively.</em></p></div>
<ul>
<li aria-level="1"><b>Weekly &#8211; 4x: </b><span style="font-weight: 400;">Obviously not every month has exactly four weeks so if you want, you can take your weekly net earnings, multiply those by 52 (weeks per year) then divide that by 12 (months per year) to get a more accurate picture of your average monthly net income. </span></li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li aria-level="1"><b>Twice a Month &#8211; 2x: </b><span style="font-weight: 400;">If you get paid every other week, </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">most months</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;"> this will mean you get two paychecks. However, if you would like to account for the months where you get an extra paycheck, multiply your net paycheck by 26 (total paychecks per year) then divide that number by 12 (months per year) to get a more accurate picture of your average monthly net income that accounts for all paychecks.</span></li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li aria-level="1"><b>Once a Month &#8211; 1x: </b><span style="font-weight: 400;"><span style="font-weight: 400;"><span style="font-weight: 400;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">MoneySwell is summing monthly income so no multiplier is needed.</span></span></span></span></li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li aria-level="1"><b>Irregular: </b><span style="font-weight: 400;">If you have a job or an income source that is irregular in frequency or amount, estimate the low and high amounts you might expect in a month. MoneySwell will average those two numbers. For example if you typically make between $100 and $200 a month for dog walking, MoneySwell will estimate $150 per month.</span></li>
</ul>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Once you’ve entered all your sources of income, make a note of the date and your estimated income in this task’s notes field (available to <a href="https://www.moneyswell.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">logged in users</a>). Hopefully you can look back on this number someday and be proud to have seen your income rise.</span></p>
