End-of-Year Budgeting: Three Simple Ways to Win

Focus on Awareness, Not Perfection (The “Jesse” Method)

The Challenge: Jesse often spends more than she earns in November and December, which causes stress.

The MoneySwell Fix: She uses Budget Planner to create a two-month plan and realizes her total imbalance is $1,500. Because her savings the rest of the year cover this amount, she can now spend comfortably, knowing her overall financial picture is healthy.

The Takeaway: A plan—even an imperfect one—gives you confidence and reduces stress by showing you what your budget can truly handle.

Track Only What Matters (The “Jane” Method)

The Challenge: Jane wants to track her holiday gift spending for 15 people but hates tracking every single expense.

The MoneySwell Fix: Instead of a full budget, she only creates specific categories in Budget Planner for her 15 gift recipients. She syncs her transactions a few times per month and ignores all transactions unrelated to gift-giving. Her dashboard shows her overall gift spending and a breakdown by person.

The Takeaway: You don’t have to overhaul your life. Track only the “end-of-year extras” to keep your most vulnerable spending areas in check.

Two Months is Enough (The “Taylor” Method)

The Challenge: Taylor wants to max out his 401(k) and HSA contributions this year but is nervous about running out of cash before January 1st.

The MoneySwell Fix: He decides to use the Budget Planner for just November and December. By creating a temporary plan, he confirms that, while tight, he can cover her expenses and max out his savings goals.

The Takeaway: MoneySwell is perfect for short-term financial sprints. Use it for these critical two months to ensure you hit your major year-end financial targets.

There’s no “one way to budget.” But by putting healthy awareness on your cash flow, you can reduce stress, keep your balance sheet healthy, and genuinely enjoy whatever you choose to spend your money on.

Three End-of-Year Financial Reminders

Did you hit your minimum, target, or stretch goal for tax-advantaged retirement contributions this year? Log in to your provider’s website to confirm how your total contributions (including potential employer matches) stack up. If you’re close to a goal, a small percentage adjustment now can make a big difference.

MoneySwell Tip #1: When you update your Retirement Planner, you can instantly visualize how your contributions align with your goals for the year.

MoneySwell Tip #2: Use our 401k Match Calculator to confirm if you’re getting your employer’s full company match.

Secure a Final 2025 Tax Break Through Charitable Giving
It’s been estimated that ~30% of annual donations to charity happen in December alone. That means a cause you care about is counting on your generosity. In addition to supporting your charity, donations to qualifying non-profit organizations generally reduce your taxable income. This means a $100 contribution may only cost you about $70 in real terms (depending on your bracket) once your tax savings are factored in.

Review Your Health Insurance (Open Enrollment)
The fall is the only time most people can change or sign up for health insurance. This is a critical action to prepare for your 2026 financial stability.

MoneySwell Action Item: Don’t just re-enroll—evaluate your options! Consider this key question before your deadline: Have your anticipated health expenses changed? You may want to choose a plan with a lower deductible if you expect major procedures, or a higher deductible if you plan for minimal care. Also, consider a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) that allows you to contribute to a Health Savings Account (HSA)—an excellent, triple-tax-advantaged way to save for future healthcare costs.

It was hard work but the food was delicious. And I made rent.

Around this time, my mom gave me a book called The Money Book for the Young, Fabulous & Broke by personal finance guru Suze Orman. I was definitely young, and close to broke, but I didn’t feel fabulous. Nonetheless, I read the book cover to cover. I promised myself I would follow its advice.

Several months later, I transitioned to a temp job in an office. The hours were better and I hoped it would provide a wider range of job opportunities down the line. But I was actually making less money than when I worked at the restaurant.

Over my first year in New York, I scraped by financially. But I managed to save about $100 a month, enough to cover the move-in fees on my new, cheaper apartment. Not only that, but my hope proved true: The first day in my new apartment was also the first day of my new salaried job (with benefits!) at $40k. On my own and for the first time, I had moved up a rung. It felt amazing.

I tracked my spending and earned at least a little more than I spent. But to secure my financial future I knew I needed to apply more lessons from Suze’s book. In my mid twenties, I focused on paying off student loans, retirement planning, and taking advantage of compounding interest.

Within a few months of getting a salaried job, I opened up a Roth IRA, set up automatic contributions, and invested in low-cost, broad market ETFs.

It wasn’t long before I got raises, changed jobs, and eventually started to earn more than the allowable income threshold for contributing to a Roth IRA. I felt fortunate, and yes, even a little “fabulous” by this point.

My Roth has continued growing on its own even though I haven’t contributed in many years. Today, my Roth IRA is a powerful testament to the power of compounding and early action.

Why do I share this now?

I’ve been thinking about the early days of my personal finance journey because MoneySwell recently brought on two social media interns from the University of Colorado Boulder: Lyndsey Shahani and Parker Brown. They will be working with us throughout the fall and I’m excited to have them on board!

As they use MoneySwell to manage their money and learn important financial lessons, I’m thrilled to see their first posts focusing on compounding interest, retirement planning, and budgeting.

Add Essential Expenses: Go to your Budget Planner dashboard (available to logged in users) and use a calculator to add up all expenses that are truly “Essential” (see below for guidance). Don’t forget to include some portion of “Essential” expenses that occur less than once a month.

Add Net Income: Next, add up all your net income. “Net income” is the money you actually receive after taxes and other deductions are taken out. Just like with expenses, you may want to include some portion of income that you receive less frequently than monthly.

Review the Difference: If your Essential Expenses is greater than your total “Net Income”, you’ll need to find ways to increase your income or reduce your expenses by at least the difference of these two numbers.

Now, let’s take a closer look at what to include in “Essential Expenses” and “Income.”

Typical Essential Expenses

Housing – typically rent or mortgage

Food – just the essentials. Ideally this is a bit more than rice, beans, and ramen but it certainly shouldn’t include fancy cocktails or expensive meals on the town if those could be supplemented with lower-cost options or forgone entirely.

Utilities – at a minimum this will include electricity, heating, water but you may also want to include a cell phone bill and internet service.

Transportation – gasoline, public transit costs (including monthly passes) and insurance (if you drive your own vehicle).

Debt – including the minimum amount due to all loans and credit cards. Note: The minimum amount due on a credit card is typically a percentage of the total balance and can therefore fluctuate. If you have outstanding credit card debt consider transferring this to a single card and having a different card that you pay off in full every month. Then, only include the outstanding credit card debt payment in your “Essential Debt Expenses” (all other essential expenses – regardless of how they are charged and paid for – should fall into one of the previously mentioned categories).

Childcare – If you have a child, and you need childcare to be able to do your job and earn income, this is an essential expense.

Savings* – includes any money you take from your income and dedicate to saving. While not truly “essential”, and also not typically thought of as an “expense”, by including this as an essential expense, it can help you to build an emergency fund.

Net Income Sources

Job Income – often comes in the form of a paycheck that – depending on your job and the consistency of hours – may be of a fairly regular amount.

Tips – depending on your job this could be a significant and fairly predictable source of net income.

There’s Nothing Wrong with Getting Help

If you are having trouble making ends meet, there are three possible solutions: You can earn more, spend less, or do a little of both. Therefore, before you commit to leveraging the financial support listed below, do a few Google searches to find creative ways to earn more income or reduce expenses. You may find some great ideas from other creative people out there with a situation not entirely different from your own.

That said, there are going to be times when you have done all you reasonably can. And if you’re in this situation, there are three things to do before you actually get the assistance you need. For each question below, write a brief answer in the notes field (available to logged in users) above to help you frame your challenge.

Why can’t I make ends meet?

The question may seem obvious but there are a variety of reasons you may find yourself in this situation. And that’s ok. What matters is that you’re honest with yourself. For example:

I’m getting ready to live on my own for the first time. I need to save money and learn how to live within my means.

I’m already fairly frugal but I need to earn more money.

I already earn decent income but I spend beyond my means on non-essential purchases.

I’ve had some unexpected expenses that have temporarily impacted my finances.

I’m using some of my income to pay for previously incurred debt.

Whatever the case may be, knowing the answer to this question may help you determine the type of support that’s best for you.

What type of support do I need?

Even though your challenge is a financial one, there may be multiple ways to receive support.

A good or service you need you can barter for by offering something other than cash (e.g. you babysit or do errands for your friends for “free” while they let you stay at their house for a week or two).

What is my post-support plan?

More specifically, what is your plan to repay the support you receive (if needed) or, what is your plan to get into a position such that you’ll no longer need the support? Depending on the support you need, this could be a short-term plan or a long-term plan. For example:

Work more hours or get a second job or side gig to earn more money

Get a new, better paying job or ask for a raise or promotion

Take educational courses or training to be more qualified for a better job

Finish paying off past debts so you can use your existing income to pay for your life today

There’s a good chance you’re already doing some of the suggestions listed above. And if that’s the case, let the resource that is providing you with additional support know! They will be glad to know you’re thinking ahead about how to improve your situation.

Support Resources

Now that you have a clearer idea of why you need support, the type of support you may need, and have a rough idea of your plan to eventually move beyond needing that extra support, you are ready to review the resources below and consider which ones may be appropriate for your situation.

Direct Cash: This is likely to come directly from friends or family. You can ask them directly or you can set up online campaigns through sites like GoFundMe.

Housing: Search the web for terms like “local housing services” to find out about non-profits or government agencies in your area that may be able to offer long-term affordable housing options or temporary housing options.

Food: Sites like Feeding America can help you find your local food bank and the U.S. government can provide help through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program(SNAP).

Services: If you need help for essential services like household utilities (heat, water, electricity etc.) it’s best to contact the utility company directly and see if they can offer you a discounted rate. After that, contact your local city government offices to see if there are local programs available to help.

Debt Owed: If you have debt, you may want to contact the company you owe money to first and try to negotiate. If you’re not comfortable with that or you’ve already tried it, leverage the resources available on the U.S. Government’s FTC site about dealing with debt. Whenever you’re searching for help with debt it’s best to ensure you’re getting your information from a reliable and trustworthy source.

Loans: If you had unexpected expenses or you know you will soon be able to make ends meet plus a bit more, taking out a temporary loan can be a reasonable option. Just make sure you are not creating a bigger problem than you already had. Depending on your situation, you may consider a Personal Loan (a great review of choices are here), or a Home Equity Line of Credit (only an option if you own a home and owe less on it than what it’s worth).

Unemployment Benefits: Depending on your situation, you may be eligible for unemployment benefits. Typically, unemployment provides a certain percentage of your wages from a previously held job, for specified period of time. Each state sets their own limits for how much you must have earned from that previous job to be eligible. Additionally, there may be other requirements like needing to prove you’re looking for new work. To find out if you’re eligible, search for “Unemployment Benefits” followed by your state’s name.

Benefits & Drawbacks of Different forms of Support

Finally, before you start taking a benefit from any of the resources available to you, consider some of the benefits and drawbacks of each. This may be helpful to discover the resource that is best for you.

Take the time to research online and find a good fit for the specific financial issue you’re facing. Don’t be ashamed to ask for help. Remember that there are many successful people who hit a rough patch and overcame it to become financially healthy and a whole lot more. You’re not alone and you will make progress!

We get it: Tracking expenses is annoying. Most people can’t stick with “tracking every dollar” for the long haul. That’s why in the task to set up your Budget Planner dashboard, we described three different methods for tracking your spending:

Track spending by account

Tracking spending by category

A mix of account and category tracking

Many people start out tracking by category to get a sense of where they spend their money and then once they feel like they have a good handle on this they move to looking at total expenditures by account. It’s much easier to update and track just one spending number per account per month than to track every single category of spending.

Our recommendation is to try one method for two months and if it doesn’t work for you for whatever reason, try another method.

Tracking by Account

As previously stated in an earlier task:

Look at the “Total Purchases” line on your monthly account statements.

Compare a few month’s worth of statements to get a good estimate of your low and high spending numbers. Or, you can calculate your average number between statements and enter that average number in both fields.

Do steps one and two for each credit card and all checking accounts you regularly use.

Tracking by Category

Review the categories below and add your low and high estimates in for any that apply to you. If you don’t have any idea what you spend, many credit card and checking accounts have a section on the site that will break down your spending by category so take a look at that if you need help.

Conclusion

That’s it! You now have a plan set up for tracking your monthly expenses. If you track by account, you should be able to track your budget in about ten minutes per month. If you track by category, it will take you a bit longer but you’ll have a granular view of precisely where your money is going.

Learning how to manage your own finances and become financially self-sufficient is no easy task. And yet, it’s a task that virtually everyone wants to reach. How do you do it? It all comes down to balancing your expenses with your income.

So, how can understanding the costs of your “basic needs” be helpful? First, it can help you understand the difference between your current expenses, and your possible expenses if you were forced to make some changes.

Secondly, by determining your minimum expenses, you can also determine the income you’ll need to support yourself.

Defining “Financial Sufficiency”

Meeting basic needs is about sufficiency. While you get to decide precisely what “sufficient” means, it shouldn’t be glamorous. It doesn’t include vacations to Mexico, multiple streaming TV services, buying the latest electronics, or a $500 a month clothing budget. Put differently, vacations are extra, you don’t need a streaming TV service, a free cell phone with a basic plan is fine, and most of the clothes you already own are probably good enough.

The categories below are typical “Basic Needs” categories. For each category consider what your costs are (or what they could be). Then, think about all the things that are not on the list. Remember: The goal of this exercise is to define the floor of your expenses. You may decide you want a lifestyle that goes beyond the basics. But by completing this exercise you’ll know the minimum you need to survive.

Add a value for each category. If your monthly cost is variable, enter a low and high value (MoneySwell will take the average). If it is a fixed cost, enter the same number in both the high and low fields.

Lastly, record the total of these costs in the notes section above (available for logged in users) for future reference (since you’ll likely be adding additional items in Budget Goals after this).

Note: Even if you end up creating a plan in Budget Planner that tracks by account (a method we really like) instead of by category, there’s a lot of value in going through the exercise of tracking your basic expenses by category at least one time.
