My job? Help these brands sell more stuff. Specifically, my focus was on digital marketing—using a variety of tactics to create user experiences that would get people to buy in the first place, spend more when they did, and come back to do it again because the process was so seamless and delightful.

One of the most well-known marketing tactics is “The Sale.” The Sale is the carrot that tempts consumers into stores, ready to buy. Sales help retailers get rid of surplus volume and get a (relatively) predictable bump in revenue. Meanwhile, consumers get items they wanted (and a few they didn’t even know they wanted) at a discount.

The modern evolution of “The Sale” is Black Friday and Cyber Monday. It’s The Sale on steroids. In recent years, it hasn’t even been confined to those two days. Many retailers attribute revenue to their “holiday season” from October through the end of the year. Some even offer deals that span that entire timeframe.

This raises the question: Is there anything wrong with this?

On one hand, the answer is no. After all, businesses fail every day; their job is to sell products so they can stay in business, pay their employees, and maintain their buildings. When it works out well, consumers find great products at prices that are worth it to them.

On the other hand, retailers know a lot about consumer psychology and buying habits. They run tests with millions of users with the aim of learning how to price items, how to pair items, when to sell something at a loss, and when to sell something at a higher cost. The list goes on and on. They use this knowledge to get consumers to spend in ways—and amounts—they may not have intended.

This doesn’t necessarily mean these tactics are “wrong.” But it does mean that consumers and retailers are both engaged in a game of marketing shenanigans. Consumers know (at least to some extent) that retailers are trying to squeeze every last penny out of them, while retailers know that consumers are hunting for the best prices and convenience anywhere they can get it.

So, what does MoneySwell have to say about all these marketing shenanigans? “No thank you.”

Here’s the thing: Our brand and our values at MoneySwell are based on transparency and trust. We price our product in a way that works for our business and provides great value for our customers. Marketing shenanigans undermine both. Not only that, we hate waste. Too often, sales and similar marketing tactics result in people getting things they don’t want or need. In some small way, we’re all poorer for this because waste means that resources—and your hard-earned dollars—aren’t allocated to their best use.

Therefore, if you’re in the market for a personal finance tool and you think you’ll get a great return on your investment (by spending less, saving more, or gaining peace of mind), by all means, give MoneySwell a try starting with our 34-day free trial!

But we’ll leave the shenanigans to the others.

Happy Thanksgiving! 🦃

End-of-Year Budgeting: Three Simple Ways to Win

Focus on Awareness, Not Perfection (The “Jesse” Method)

The Challenge: Jesse often spends more than she earns in November and December, which causes stress.

The MoneySwell Fix: She uses Budget Planner to create a two-month plan and realizes her total imbalance is $1,500. Because her savings the rest of the year cover this amount, she can now spend comfortably, knowing her overall financial picture is healthy.

The Takeaway: A plan—even an imperfect one—gives you confidence and reduces stress by showing you what your budget can truly handle.

Track Only What Matters (The “Jane” Method)

The Challenge: Jane wants to track her holiday gift spending for 15 people but hates tracking every single expense.

The MoneySwell Fix: Instead of a full budget, she only creates specific categories in Budget Planner for her 15 gift recipients. She syncs her transactions a few times per month and ignores all transactions unrelated to gift-giving. Her dashboard shows her overall gift spending and a breakdown by person.

The Takeaway: You don’t have to overhaul your life. Track only the “end-of-year extras” to keep your most vulnerable spending areas in check.

Two Months is Enough (The “Taylor” Method)

The Challenge: Taylor wants to max out his 401(k) and HSA contributions this year but is nervous about running out of cash before January 1st.

The MoneySwell Fix: He decides to use the Budget Planner for just November and December. By creating a temporary plan, he confirms that, while tight, he can cover her expenses and max out his savings goals.

The Takeaway: MoneySwell is perfect for short-term financial sprints. Use it for these critical two months to ensure you hit your major year-end financial targets.

There’s no “one way to budget.” But by putting healthy awareness on your cash flow, you can reduce stress, keep your balance sheet healthy, and genuinely enjoy whatever you choose to spend your money on.

My rows and rows of data were glorious. But this isn’t a humblebrag. After a decade of tracking everything, I spent years tracking almost nothing.

I’d like to share my personal financial evolution. It’s the journey that took me from the extreme 5% tracker to being part of the 95% who find traditional budgeting restrictive, tedious, and unsustainable and who understand that financial wellness is about more than budgeting.

There’s more than one way to get your financial life on track.

Why I Tracked Every Dollar What Worked For Me

In high school my mom co-signed on a credit card with me, taught me some credit card basics (“Never just pay the minimum balance.”), and introduced me to Quicken – the go-to personal finance software at the time. I worked (babysitting and concessions at college sporting events) and even though my finances were dead simple, it was cool to see what I was making and spending. Using Quicken did a few things: It got me familiar with balancing a checking account, tracking my credit card, and reinforced the savings habit.

In college, my finances were a little more complex. I had student loans, apartment rent, and was buying all my own groceries. The detailed tracking habit I developed in high school proved useful. It helped ensure I wasn’t going into any more debt during college than I had to.

After graduating I moved across the country without a job lined up. The shock of “adulting” was real. I worked a lot and was able to pay my essentials. But in many months, I barely earned more than I spent. Splurging on a night out or buying a few extras could easily be the difference between making progress and falling backward. Life wasn’t glamorous. But my detailed financial tracking kept my stress low because I always knew exactly where I stood.

What Changed

As my income grew and I kept my spending in check, I eventually built a solid emergency fund. I was no longer in the position where a few extra nights out, or even outfitting myself with a bunch of ski gear (I was in Colorado now and certain things were important to me) made much of a difference. Some months I saved a little more, some months I saved a little less. But I was always saving and felt fortunate my income supported this. One day it hit me: I’m not getting a lot of value from detailed tracking. So I stopped.

And everything was fine. Life continued much as it had before.

Life Gets More Complex

As my savings grew and I developed a desire to put down roots, I bought a house. Not long after I met the woman who would become my wife. We shared our dreams about pets, travel, kids, and even retirement. It wasn’t long before we were married. Life was full and wonderful. And…nagging thoughts kept creeping into my mind: If we want to accomplish our dreams, are we making the right financial moves? Are we on track? How can we make this simple?

Just looking at the balances in our accounts a few times a month no longer felt like enough. I needed a complete and clear view of our family finances. I wanted to:

Confirm our investments were on track.

Budget quickly and easily with whatever the “right level” of detail was for us.

Discover blind spots and ensure we were making the right financial moves.

Follow an efficient, effective, and meaningful financial routine that keeps us on the same page.

MoneySwell – A Platform Designed to Evolve With You

The trouble I had with Quicken and other personal finance tools I tried was that they weren’t holistic. They felt more like accounting tools than a personal finance platform. They didn’t help you build routine. They nudged you into tracking every dollar in ways that simply aren’t sustainable for most people. And they didn’t integrate the educational content that’s essential to making lasting financial progress.

Long story short, I built a tool that would accomplish all of these goals and more. First in a spreadsheet and then, with the help of Erik, in a web app.

We wanted a product that works whether someone wants an incredibly detailed budget or just a tool to track the basics. We wanted a product that would provide the right financial education at the right time in a person’s financial journey. We wanted a product that would help people see the forest for the trees in their financial lives and understand the difference between the two.

I now spend about 15 minutes a month managing our finances. My wife and I are on the same page and despite life’s expenses and complexities. And even after leaving the corporate world to build this business, our financial stress is kept in check because of MoneySwell.

That’s my story. At MoneySwell, we strive to be honest with our experience while acknowledging it comes from a place of relative privilege.

We understand that everyone’s situation and history is different. You are likely to have different obstacles to overcome. But the platform we built aims to be universal and meet you where you are.

It’s been estimated that ~30% of annual donations to charity happen in December alone. That means a cause you care about is counting on your generosity. In addition to supporting your charity, donations to qualifying non-profit organizations generally reduce your taxable income. This means a $100 contribution may only cost you about $70 in real terms (depending on your bracket) once your tax savings are factored in.

The fall is the only time most people can change or sign up for health insurance. This is a critical action to prepare for your 2026 financial stability.

MoneySwell Action Item: Don’t just re-enroll—evaluate your options! Consider this key question before your deadline: Have your anticipated health expenses changed? You may want to choose a plan with a lower deductible if you expect major procedures, or a higher deductible if you plan for minimal care. Also, consider a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) that allows you to contribute to a Health Savings Account (HSA)—an excellent, triple-tax-advantaged way to save for future healthcare costs.

But here’s the thing: Open Enrollment shouldn’t just be about signing up for the same thing you’ve done in the past. In fact, the decisions you make for your health plan can have a significant impact on your overall financial picture for the entire year. So it’s important to make your decisions around health insurance with care.

Key Questions for Consideration

Have your anticipated health expenses changed? Are you planning on getting surgery, adding a new member to your family, spending a significant period of the year outside of the country? If so, you may want to consider whether your deductible (the amount you must pay toward health related costs before your insurance kicks in) is optimized. For example, if you expect major medical procedures, a plan with a lower deductible may make sense. You’ll pay a higher monthly premium but that may be offset by having more of your expenses covered. Conversely, a lower premium but higher deductible may make sense if you don’t expect many significant health care expenses.Keep in mind that with every health insurance plan, there are some medical expenses that are covered regardless of your deductible. For example most preventative care (think annual checkups etc.) and a lot of the routine appointments of a newborn baby are typically covered.

MoneySwell Tip: If you don’t remember what all the health insurance terms mean or how to evaluate our options, check out this quick reference.

Do you want the ability to contribute to an HSA (Health Savings Account)? Enrolling in a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) is typically required in order to be eligible for contributing to a Health Savings Account (HSA). Contributions to an HSA are often called “triple-tax-advantaged” because they:

Reduce your taxable income now

When invested, grow tax free

When withdrawn for medical expenses are tax free (Note: Another great thing about HSA funds is that even when they’re not withdrawn for medical expenses, if you are of retirement age, there is no penalty for withdrawing for other purposes. So while you will be taxed in that circumstance, it would be no different than if you were withdrawing funds from a standard 401(k) or similar. This makes HSA a great retirement savings method.)

Review your plan options carefully and use the tools on your enrollment website to make a decision that’s right for you.

When is Open Enrollment? Key Dates

Now that you know what to be thinking about during open enrollment, when can you get started? Review the table below for general guidelines.

It was hard work but the food was delicious. And I made rent.

Around this time, my mom gave me a book called The Money Book for the Young, Fabulous & Broke by personal finance guru Suze Orman. I was definitely young, and close to broke, but I didn’t feel fabulous. Nonetheless, I read the book cover to cover. I promised myself I would follow its advice.

Several months later, I transitioned to a temp job in an office. The hours were better and I hoped it would provide a wider range of job opportunities down the line. But I was actually making less money than when I worked at the restaurant.

Over my first year in New York, I scraped by financially. But I managed to save about $100 a month, enough to cover the move-in fees on my new, cheaper apartment. Not only that, but my hope proved true: The first day in my new apartment was also the first day of my new salaried job (with benefits!) at $40k. On my own and for the first time, I had moved up a rung. It felt amazing.

I tracked my spending and earned at least a little more than I spent. But to secure my financial future I knew I needed to apply more lessons from Suze’s book. In my mid twenties, I focused on paying off student loans, retirement planning, and taking advantage of compounding interest.

Within a few months of getting a salaried job, I opened up a Roth IRA, set up automatic contributions, and invested in low-cost, broad market ETFs.

It wasn’t long before I got raises, changed jobs, and eventually started to earn more than the allowable income threshold for contributing to a Roth IRA. I felt fortunate, and yes, even a little “fabulous” by this point.

My Roth has continued growing on its own even though I haven’t contributed in many years. Today, my Roth IRA is a powerful testament to the power of compounding and early action.

Why do I share this now?

I’ve been thinking about the early days of my personal finance journey because MoneySwell recently brought on two social media interns from the University of Colorado Boulder: Lyndsey Shahani and Parker Brown. They will be working with us throughout the fall and I’m excited to have them on board!

As they use MoneySwell to manage their money and learn important financial lessons, I’m thrilled to see their first posts focusing on compounding interest, retirement planning, and budgeting.

Not “sticking with it” is a huge problem. One of the biggest themes in personal finance is consistency. Without consistency, you’re on a road to nowhere, treading water but never really getting ahead, or feeling financially fit.

A lack of consistency in your financial habits won’t fare you much better.

The History

The relative success of many personal finance tools historically relied on technological novelty. In the early days, this meant linking your bank accounts in one place and syncing transactions. More recently, some platforms have adopted aspects of AI. We applaud these technological developments. They’ve been important steps to get us where we are today.

The trouble is, technological novelty hasn’t solved the “can’t stick with it” problem. (Perhaps this is why Mint has recently been “reimagined”, as they put it.)

As a scrappy startup, MoneySwell wanted to do things differently. We were thorough in our research and focused on the “can’t stick with it” problem. To be successful, we couldn’t just build a PRODUCT. We needed to build a SOLUTION.

The Blockers

So, why can’t most users stick with a personal finance tool? We found four themes.

Lack of Meaningful Routine

Lack of a Plan

Not Enough Time

Financial Tasks are Important, But Rarely Urgent

The Solution

In our upcoming webinar, Financial Fitness Made Easy, we define “financial fitness” as being organized, in control, having low financial stress, and making progress. We’ll be walking through exactly how MoneySwell tackled the root problems to help people achieve financial fitness.

If you’ve experienced one of the blockers mentioned above and are looking to improve your financial fitness, this 30 minute webinar is for you!
Did you set New Year’s resolutions this year? If so, you’re likely either making progress on it, or have forgotten about it entirely.

According to the most recent YouGov survey on the matter, most U.S. adults, 55%, said they did not plan to set New Year’s resolutions, 31% said they did, and 14% weren’t sure. The general trend is that the older you are, the less likely you are to set resolutions. Apparently, we become jaded with the idea of making promises to ourselves as we age.

Historically, I’ve thought that if you want to set a goal, why wait for the new year to do it? However, milestones, including new year’s, are convenient opportunities to reflect on the past and make plans for the future. So maybe I am a “New Year Resolutioner” after all.

I do a bit of financial goal setting at the beginning of the new year. Apparently I’m not alone. In 2025, the most popular resolution was to save more money (26%) and another popular resolution was to pay off debt (13%).

Habits Matter

But whether you’ve set resolutions or not, if you want to make progress with something, developing a habit is important. In The Power of Habit, Charles Duhigg states that much of what we do is out of habit, not choice.

MoneySwell, and particularly our Budget Planner tool, was designed with habits in mind. Specifically, we put a lot of thought into designing a tool that would help people create sustainable and healthy financial routines. (Learn about how to build a good financial habit here.) With Budget Planner, we addressed the most common complaints we heard about budgeting. Specifically, that it takes too much time, is too hard to get back on track when you fall behind, or that it doesn’t help with achieving financial goals.

Leverage Your Perks & Take Action!

So, whether you set New Year’s resolutions or not, if you want to make a financial plan for the year, check out MoneySwell! And if you work for an employer who provides you with some form of “wellness dollars”, don’t forget that you can usually use those for personal finance applications like MoneySwell!

Here’s to making 2025 a great year for financial wellness!

Do you want to improve employee productivity? Do you want to reduce employee turnover? Do you want to reduce employee stress?

If so, you should be using every cost-effective tool in your toolbox to ensure that happens. And one of the ways you can do that is by offering your employees a financial wellness benefit. This benefit should include a platform offering financial education and money management tools that are unaffiliated with the sale of any financial products.

Your Employees’ Concerns

This is as important today as ever. Because today’s workforce is stressed about money. They’re spending an average of 8 hours a week on personal finance tasks and at least 4 of those hours are at work.

But with a good financial wellness platform that employees actually use, research shows you can reduce at least one hour a week that your employees are spending on personal financial management. When you do the ROI calculation on this, it’s no wonder employers are interested. (Keep an eye out for an upcoming post that dives into the ROI data! You’ll be amazed.)

But what’s more, employees love it when employers offer this! It makes them feel seen, it makes them feel like the company has a people-centric culture. And it’s probably why 77% of employees say a financial wellness offering is an important benefit to them.

The time to enhance your benefits package is now

Despite significant growth in this HR benefit category, still only about a quarter (28%) of employers offer this. If you’re interested in offering this benefit, check out the MoneySwell promo video (don’t worry, it’s only 80 seconds)!

If you’d like a one-on-one demo, you can schedule one here.
